Abbot + Main by Kellan Lutz

All that time spent in wardrobe paid off…

by Josh Madden

Anyone who's ever spent any time on the set of a movie or television show will surely be surprised by the prospect that the time the actors spend in wardrobe is at the very least equal to their time spent on screen. And when it comes to modeling, the amount of time spent getting dressed is at least double the time spent on the catwalk or in front of the camera. That being said, it's no surprise that double threat, model/actor Kellan Lutz is transitioning into the role of designer. We spoke with him about his new venture Abbot + Main and how work and travel is inspiring the look and feel of the line. Check out what he had to say and keep an eye out for the new collection, which hits retailers everywhere this spring. How did you get into designing? How did Abbot + Main get its start?I started as a model, so I was able to get an inside view of the fashion industry. Going from modeling to design was a natural transition. I was living in Venice and met Danny Guez, my business partner, through mutual friends, and we clicked since we both had the same vision for a Venice Beach-inspired lifestyle brand. What do you like most about designing?I love the process from beginning to end. It’s a great creative outlet for me. My career lends me the opportunity to travel the world and I’m always inspired by my surroundings and environment. How does your creative background outside of the fashion industry influence your design perspective?Acting has broadened my exposure to different styles and has given me an added appreciation for the details. How would you characterize the overall aesthetic of your line? Our goal is to fill your closet with pieces that become your favorite, go-to items. How would you describe Abbot + Main customers? They lead an active lifestyle and appreciate that our fabric selections are second to none. They rely on us for consistent comfort and fit. What was the inspiration behind this spring ’14 collection? The inspiration behind spring ’14 was a classic fit with an updated twist—lots of non-traditional bodies mixed with timeless fabrics, such as our Sherpa cardigan. What are some of your favorite pieces in the spring '14 collection?I’m loving our military thermal and tri-blend groups. They’re the perfect mix of classic fits and new fashion bodies.
