If you grew up in the '90s, had a TV, and suffered from an addiction to Disney channel like most of us, then $10 says you already know Alexz Johnson. The actress starred on the series So Weird from 2004-2006, and later went on to nab roles in Final Destination: 3 and the Canadian show Instant Star. But these days? She's been busy pursuing a singing career, crafting a sound that weaves honey-smooth vocals and folksy melodies. It's a result that's unexpected, especially coming from a former Disney kid--but definitely not a bad thing. In fact, it's pretty damn great, as you'll see from "American Dreamer."

The new single off Johnson's forthcoming EP Heart, it's a free-spirited ballad with a breezy Stevie Nicks vibe, and, as she puts it herself, "I hope to create timeless music, not trendy." Considering the singer has opted against major record deals and is instead producing her EP from fan support, it's clear that the independent vibes run way deeper than the notes resonating in your headphones. "I moved to NYC with nothing in my pockets and no Visa, determined to tour and play all over the world," the Brooklyn-based musician explains. "No matter what... this song is a reflection of my time here living in NYC so far."

Filmed in collaboration with her friend Jessica Earnshaw, the "American Dreamer" lyric video might be straightforward, but if the gorgeous shots and equally rich vocals don't give you the urge to get in the car, roll down your windows and just go, then we don't know what will. Indulge your wanderlust and watch the video below, then listen to more Alexz Johnson here.
