meet skip marley, following in his grandfather’s footsteps

the legend continues

by nylon

With one of the most legendary last names in music, expectations on Skip Marley are major. But true to his family's laid-back disposition, Marley is pretty relaxed about the whole thing. Grandson to Bob, nephew to Ziggy and Stephen, Marley is continuing in his family's tradition and is currently on tour with both uncles, in support of his latest single, "Cry to Me." Marley, who's name is an homage to Bob's nickname, is working on new material and should have a new album ready in the near future. Here, we get to know the latest Marley destined for music greatness.

How would you describe your aesthetic?

I would have to say, my aesthetic is very eclectic.

How did your career get started?

When I was around 15/16, my Uncle Stephen really pushed my music. It was unexpected. One night before a show on his tour he said, "You are singing tonight." I had never sung in public before and began to panic. At the end of his show he called me on stage to sing "One Love" and it felt so natural and comfortable to be on stage. I knew then that this was what I wanted to do.

What’s your next project?

My next project is to complete and solidify "Crystal Clear," a song on my upcoming album. It should be ready for release by end of the year.

What famous person dead or living do most wish you could have as a roommate?

It would definitely be my grandfather, Bob. I would love to be able to wake up and talk to him, just a regular conversation. I would love to play dominos with him, write music, and play our acoustic guitars together and just learn from him.

Whose career would you most like to emulate?

I don't want to emulate anyone. We can learn from people and adopt certain aspects of them, but they are still an individual—no one is the same.

If you had to live in a past time, what do you think would be the most fun era and why?

I think the 70s would be the most fun era. There was elements of everything...rebellion, freedom, love, peace, music and people who weren't as egotistical and materialistic as today.

What activities do most enjoy doing alone?

When I'm alone I love writing music and meditating.

How do you wind down before bed?

I don't typically "wind down" before bed. Usually when I'm tired enough, I just fall asleep.

When are you most relaxed?

I'm most relaxed in a natural environment, like the hills.

Do you have any phobias?

No phobias, I try to not let fear control my thoughts and actions. I could do without snakes and spiders though!

What’s a serious side of you that people are unlikely to know about?

I'm actually very serious about soccer. I love watching it, playing it, and just respect the sport in general.

What are some new hobbies you would like to take on?

I would like to take on surfing and parasailing, I'm into water sports.

If there was a phrase that you think best sums up your approach to life what might it be?

Proceed with caution. lol.

Skip's tour starts this week and you can see dates here.
