In a year that's already included monster albums from the pop world's ruling class, one of the best releases of 2016 might, in fact, be one of the smallest. The U.K. electronic duo Darkstar is set to release their new EP Made to Measure, which includes the sensuous track "Reformer," featuring Empress Of. The song, which premiered back in March, finally has visuals, which feature Empress Of (aka Lorely Rodriguez) walking along a beach at sunset. It's the perfect complement to the atmospheric single, which Darkstar talked about at the time of the song's release.
"Lorely came over to our studio, Konk, in North London at the end of summer, where we played through sketches we had,” said Darkstar’s James Young at the time. "Lorely played a load of her stuff and we’d given her a beat that we’d been playing in some sets and wanted to do something with. She took it to the 4AD studio the next day and laid the top line on it. We got around to finishing it last month and I think she killed it. She’s one of the most capable artists I’ve been in a studio with and a great person to be in that environment with.”
Theirs is one of the more interesting and unexpected collaborations this year, and it bodes well for the rest of Darkstar's hugely anticipated release, which drops July 15 on Warp Records. Check out the video for "Reformer," below.
