the face: derek lam

learn the trick to the ultimate smoky eye.

by katie dickens

The seemingly mutually exclusive words "organic" and "urban" found a common ground in a teal smoky eye and a voluminous ponytail. For makeup artist Tom Pecheux, this meant doing an exaggerated smoky eye in a color that conjures up images of tropical swimming holes. To get it, Pecheux brushed metallic forest green and shimmery mossy green shadows onto the models' lids and below their lash lines, following the shape of their eye, then blending the edges outward. The rest of the face was fresh and natural--just perfectly glow-y skin and beige lips. Hairstylist Orlando Pita matched the statement eye with an un-boring ponytail. To add oomph to models' strands, Pita spritzed their hair with volumizing spray before blowing it out, then added loose waves from midway to the ends with a one and three quarter inch curling iron. He then created a middle part, then slicked the top back with a mix of styling cream and sculpting gel, and secured it at the nape of the neck with an elastic. To get the right amount of bigness in the tail, Pita gently backcombed the ends with a teasing brush.
