Yesterday, we brought you the wrenching first trailer for Manchester by the Sea, a widely acclaimed, weepy, pegged-by-many-as-the-movie-to-beat-all-come-Oscar-night film. Well, it looks like Garth Davis’ Lion might have something to say about that. The Weinstein Company is putting its massive clout behind the inspirational family drama, whose just-released first trailer solidified its status as a major awards contender.
Based on a remarkable true story, Lion stars Dev Patel as Saroo Brierley, a young Indian man who goes on a quest to find his real family with the help of Rooney Mara and Google Earth. Nicole Kidman, who Harvey Weinstein predicts will get an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress, stars as the loving Australian woman who adopted Saroo from an orphanage after he was separated from his family as a child.
“Google Earth is a far more advanced application now and simpler to navigate," Patel told USA Today recently. "When Saroo was searching, it was cloudy, square pixels and took ages to zoom in to look closely. This became his completely-consuming obsession, finding this needle in a haystack. This man's determination and perseverance was incredible."
Lion will have its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month before it bows in theaters on November 25. Watch the trailer above.
