The first trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn's psycho-thriller The Neon Demon dropped today, and boy is it a doozy. Elle Fanning stars as a young modeling ingenue who gets sucked into the fashion world's seedy underbelly and re-emerges as some kind of monster. Think Black Swan on the runway instead of inside the ballet studio.
The Neon Demon marks the third effort from Refn, the Danish auteur whose first films, Drive and Only God Forgives, established him as one of the most visionary directors in the game. Refn’s explosive visual style is unmistakable, and by the looks of it, The Neon Demon is just as artfully composed as his previous works. One thing that will be missing, however, is Ryan Gosling, who worked with Refn on his previous two projects.
This film belongs to Fanning, whose bold career choices as of late, signal the arrival of a brave new artist.
Unless you're going to Cannes, where The Neon Demon—produced by Amazon Studios—will play in competition, you'll have to wait until later this year to catch what's quickly becoming one of the most anticipated films of the year.
