beauty queen: emma roberts

get the shine, without getting the chop.

One way to stand out at an event that's packed with basically all of Hollywood: Debut a head-turning new look (literally). It's exactly what Emma Roberts did at a lunch earlier this week, and yep, it worked. Fellow attendees like Mindy Kaling, Kiernan Shipka, and Zooey Deschanel all looked great, but it was Roberts' sleek asymmetrical bob that still sticks with us a few days later.

The American Horror Story star is the latest in a line of actresses who've gone short (Zosia Mamet, Miley Cyrus, Lena Dunham, we're looking at you!), but whereas the rest have gone for a pixie or a choppy cut, she sported side bangs and a shoulder-skimming length. So even if you're undecided whether or not to take the plunge yourself, one thing you can do now is copy her glossy shine. Less commitment than actually going to the salon, but just as pretty? Yeah, we'll take it.

PREP IT: Hot Toddy Heat Protector Frizz Fighter- $33

Start with just-washed wet hair, and run a small amount of this creme from roots to end before you blowdry.

DRY AND SMOOTH IT: AG Tools Sweet Heat Hair Dryer- $100

Using an ionic hairdryer cuts down drying time, which is always a plus. But the biggest bonus? Probably the fact that its ceramic base makes your hair healthier and shinier, so you don't even have to do that "finish off by switching your dryer to cold" trick. Blowdry using a round brush to make it extra-smooth.

SEAL IT: Tigi Pro High Sheen Gel- $10.99

After you blow dry and straighten, dab a pea-sized amount of this shine gel for a smooth, glossy finish. With control properties (so you don't need hairspray), it'll stop fly aways, frizz, and still leave your hair soft and flexible.
