beauty queen: emma roberts

the smokey eye gets a bright update.

Is it wrong for a beauty look to affect your weekend plans? That's the (totally serious) question that popped into our heads when we first spotted Emma Roberts at this week's premiere of American Horror Story. Rather than sticking with the tried-and-true smokey eye or even a winged cat flick, the actress instead went with a glamorous one-two punch to complement her Cushnie et Ochs cutout dress. Thanks to the contrast between her dark kohl-rimmed lids and that pop of white right at the inner V, the star's makeup was simultaneously fresh-faced and dramatic (definitely not an oxymoron!). So while we figure out when we'll be able to sport it ourselves later this week, see how to replicate Roberts' gorgeous look for yourself below.

VOLUMNIZE IT: Makeup Forever Smoky Extravagant Mascara- $24

The cone-shaped wand gives a boost of volume to all of your lashes (even the hard-to-reach tiny ones!), plus lots of length and volume. And the best part is, you really just need one coat.

DRAW IT: L'Oreal Paris Extra Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner- $8.95

Line the upper and lower lid with this extra-dense pencil, focusing on the outer edges. Don't worry if it's not perfect--the smudgier, the better.

WHITEN IT: Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Polyester Bride- $18

Finally, add a dab of this shimmery pearl shadow in the inner corner of your upper eyelids. This is a makeup artist-approved trick to make the whites of your eyes pop--very Blake Lively, dontcha think?
