3 Colorful Ways To Make Festival Beauty Work Every Day

Because you’ve got to keep the spirit alive

by nylon x clinique

Come festival season, the itch to experiment with your beauty look is strong. Those tiny oases of music and style provide a stomping ground for adventurous beauty and daring inspiration. But when the lights turn off, the last band plays, and you're home washing off your fun, that spirit can fade. C'mon. It's 2016; let's work to keep that spirit alive! The saying "dress the part" translates to all aspects of style—fashion and beauty. So, to help proverbially dress the part, we enlisted makeup artist Tony Tulve (and a grab bag of Clinique products) to create three, festival-worthy beauty looks that can be worn day in and day out. They may not be your average, everyday style, but festival style is anything but average, and toned-down variations fall under that umbrella. Whether it's a different shade of eyeshadow or a nuanced take on the winged look, it's all about adding a little edge to your usual routine. Hey, you may even find a new normal in the pages, ahead. You won't know, though, until you try. So, what're you waiting for?

The Pop LipIt's almost mandatory you rock a colorful lip at a music festival. The bolder the color, the better. For most, however, the bold lip comes out to play once in a blue moon. To make the look work for the every day, Tulve started by blending exact-shade foundation all over the face. He then blended a foundation that's about three to four shades darker across the forehead, under the cheekbones, and along the jawline to add shape and warmth. Next, a little glow was added by lightly tapping Clinique's "Poppy" Glow on the cheeks. To highlight, Tulve used a cream eyeshadow. He then added the Clinique lip "Poppy Pop" colour and primer to the lips, a perfect shade for standing out. To finish the look off, he lined the eyes with a black-silver pencil and smudged it out, building intensity with layers of color.Clinique, Chubby in the Nude™ Foundation Stick in 'Abundant Alabaster,' $24, available at Clinique; Chubby in the Nude™ Foundation Stick in 'Grandest Golden Neutral,' $24, available at Clinique; Clinique Pop Oil Lip & Cheek Glow™ in 'Poppy,' $18, available at Dillard's; Clinique Pop™ Lip Colour + Primer in 'Poppy Pop,' $18, available at Clinique; Lid Pop™ in 'Cream Pop,' $17, available at Clinique; Clinique Skinny Stick™ in 'Silver Black,' $16.50, available at Clinique.

Eyes On The LineFor those who fancy a little adventure in their beauty look, Tulve toned down the traditional lines and shapes you see folks rocking at festivals. He began by perfecting the skin with a foundation that matches the model's skin tone before using a deeper shade to chisel out the cheekbones and jawline. Tulve then went on to apply a pink eyeshadow to the cheeks, and a cream shadow in place of a highlighter. Using an angled brush, he swept a teal shadow from the eye's outer corner and back into the crease. This created an opened winged, linear effect—you know, angles. He clumped teal mascara on both the top and bottom lashes. To cap it all off with a flushed gloss look Tulve used a sugar scrub to exfoliate the lips and then tapped a reddish-brown balm over them.Clinique, Chubby in the Nude™ Foundation Stick in 'Abundant Alabaster,' $24, available at Clinique; Chubby in the Nude™ Foundation Stick in 'Normous Neutral,' $24, available at Clinique; Lid Pop™ in 'Petal Pop,' $17, available at Clinique; Lid Pop™ in 'Cream Pop,' $17, available at Clinique; Lid Pop™ in 'Aqua Pop,' $17, available at Clinique; Chubby Lash™ Fattening Mascara in 'Two Ton Teal'; Clinique Sweet Pots™ Sugar Scrub & Lip Balm in 'Black Honey,' $19.50, available at Sephora.

Smoked OutThe smoky eye is, perhaps, one of the most universal ways to rock makeup. Instead of using loud colors, like you would at a festival, Tulve used an unexpected purple to create a similar effect, but in a tone that's as vampy as it is classic. Beginning by blending foundation out from the center of the face, Tulve then swept a golden foundation across the cheeks, temple, and chin for bronzed warmth. A cream eyeshadow was used to highlight the face's high points. For the eyes, Tulve lined and smudged a grape eyeliner across the upper lashline. A purple eyeshadow was added across the eye's crease and lower lashline. He then swept a pink shadow along the brow bone and inner corner of the eye. For extra pops of color, use purple mascara. To top it all off, Tulve swiped a bubblegum pink glaze across the lip and added a nude lacquer over it, to create a blush-nude effect.
