katy perry does the twist

copy her braided topknot.

by liza darwin

Katy Perry is already the epitome of a total hair chameleon--need we remind you of her cotton candy pink or her Smurfs blue phases?!--but while the pop star traditionally shakes it up with Easter Egg colors, this weekend she went a more dark-glam route. The singer sported a dramatic braided topknot before a performance in Cannes, in which not only did she do the twist on top of her head, she also added a swingy braided extensions underneath. Perry's version may have been faux, but it IS possible to recreate the look with your real hair--whether you decide to rock the whole thing or just stop at the plaited bun. Hey, she's clearly a fan of both...

1. STRAIGHTEN IT- GHD Gold Professional 2" Straightener, $225

It should go without saying that in order to really nail this look, you're going to need slick, straight hair. It typically works best on unwashed strands, so save time and skip the water--then run this ceramic iron over for an-extra straight result.

2. TWIST IT- Sephora Small Detangling Brush, $18

Next, brush your hair and lift it into a high ponytail at the crown of your head (make sure it's tight!). Braid it and secure with a clear hair elastic.

3. SECURE IT- Scunci No Slip Grip Bobby Pins, $3.99 and Bedhead Masterpiece Hairspray, $20.99

Wrap the braided part around at least twice for a topknot, then secure it with these extra-grippy bobby pins. If you still have hair left over after wrapping it around, then leave the rest as a loose ponytail. Make sure the style stays by spritzing it with hairspray.
