how to get onboard spring’s biggest hair trend early.

by liza darwin

Forget everything you know about mini-braids, because they're back...and obviously, they're way better than ever. We first called out the trend way back in September, when

Ivana Helsinki showed a rad new alternative

to the tired half-shaved 'do at her runway show.

Helsinki's version was a tightly-twisted side pleat that ran from the part down the hairline, but since then, we've spotted a handful of incarnations of this cornrows-inspired look (see also:

and

Orange Is The New Black),

and we've just found our new favorite. It comes courtesy of Kristen Stewart, who sported two tiny braids over the weekend at Sundance.

According to the actress's hairstylist Kylee Heath, "Sundance tends to be a bit more casual than other red carpets, so we just wanted a fun, pretty look." Um, we'd say they nailed it?! Get the lowdown from Heath on how she did Stewart's hair below...and you can tell everyone else you told them so come spring.

PART IT:

Oscar Blandi Hair Lift Mousse-  $23

"Starting on damp hair, I applied Oscar Blandi Hair Lift Mousse, combed it through and created a deep side part. I then blew out her hair, keeping the part straight and defined.

CURL IT:

Drybar Curling Iron- $125

"Once the hair was dry I broke the side section in two, creating two cornrows (aka miniature inside out French braids.) I then added a tousled texture by alternating between 1 and 1.5" sized irons."

SPRAY IT:

Living Proof Flex Shaping Hairspray- $24

and

Kevin Murphy Easy Rider- $45

"I finished the look with a spray of the Living Proof Flex Shaping Hairspray and Kevin Murphy Easy Rider to smooth out any frizz."
