The New ‘Little Mermaid’ Live-Action Film Is Nothing Like The ‘Little Mermaid’

It looks… interesting

by Taylor Bryant

Yet another Disney movie is getting the live-action treatment. But this isn’t the one that you’ve might’ve heard whisperings about that involves Lin-Manuel Miranda. Or, the one that Lindsay Lohan is vying for a spot in. It’s a totally different, came-out-of-left-field version that Conglomerate Media and Kingsway Productions dropped the trailer for today.

It’s The Little Mermaid, but it doesn’t include the plot anyone born prior to the early ‘00s remembers. Instead, this one tells the story of a journalist and his little sister who travel to a small town to find what’s rumored to be a real-life mermaid. There’s no red-headed Ariel! No Sebastian! No singing underwater to be found! We do get an appearance from Shirley MacLaine, a mermaid in a tank, and some British people living in Mississippi, though.

It’s coming out sometime this year, for those who are interested. Us? We’ll be waiting for the Disney version and signing Lohan’s petition to be cast as Ariel in the interim.
