How To Make Four Festival Queens’ Badass Beauty Looks Work For You

Live that fantasy

This festival season, we're making a promise to our inner Ms. Frizzle to take risks. We're going to hold ourselves true to the fantastical outfits we imagine ourselves packing and actually heed the tutorials we bookmark. Who to look at for inspiration, though?

Festival performers are a solid place to start because they don't march to any beauty beat but their own. The performers are the ones who imbue their personality into their looks, so why not embody that energy for yourself? This year, we're looking at Solange's, Kiiara's, Charli XCX's, and Bibi Bourelly's aesthetics for inspiration. They're the most badass ladies on the circuit this season, each one using beauty in a variety of ways, all of which can be adopted for the days outside the festival. Skeptical that these badass beauty looks can be worn by you in your daily life? Don't be. With help from makeup artist Tony Tulve, we're going to show you how to live the beauty fantasy you dream of each and every day.

THE INSPO: SOLANGE

Solange's look is aspirationally effortless and cool. Basically, let your eyes do the talking. A no-makeup-look foundation is a perfect playground for adventurous eye play.

This is your opportunity to be painterly. Tulve achieved the stunning texture on the model's eyelids by taking a bright teal shadow and dampening it with a mixing medium. He then added sheen and light to the eye by tapping a tinted highlighter around the lid. "This doesn't have to be perfect," he says. "Let the brush strokes flow with your eye shape and find balance; the imperfection is such a fun way to wear a pop of color."

Urban Decay, Eyeshadow in 'Peace,' $19, available at Urban Decay; Mehron, Mixing Liquid, $10.95, available at Mehron; Kat Von D, Alchemist Holographic Palette in 'Emerald' and 'Saphyre,' $32, available at Sephora.

THE INSPO: KIIARA

"Gold" singer Kiiara combined that DIY grunge aesthetic with contemporary sk8r grl. We're here for it.

Begin with a long-wearing black eye pencil and sketch out your line's desired thickness and length. (You can use a Q-tip and micellar cleanser to clean up the edges.) With an angled brush, press the dark shadow into the space created by the liner for a soft, shimmering effect. Use your ring finger to smudge the liner out across the outer lower lash line. Cap it all off with a deep black mascara.

Make Up For Ever, Aqua XL Eye Pencil Waterproof Eyeliner in 'Matte Black,' $21, available at Sephora; Urban Decay, Moondust Palette in 'Granite,' $49, available at Urban Decay; Urban Decay, Perversion Mascara, $22, available at Urban Decay.

THE INSPO: BIBI BOURELLY

Like her music, Bibi Bourelly's look is no-fuss glamour. Cunning, alluring, and smokey, catch us rocking this all day, every day.

Tulve says to begin with a deep-toned brow pencil and use it to draw lines across the upper and lower lash lines and into the crease, from the inner and outer corners of the lid, smudging it all out with a pencil brush. Tap a glittering golden shadow onto the lid, blending out from the center. Line the waterline and finish with mascara. For extra pop, Tulve says to tap a cream highlighter on the brow bone, inner corner of the eye, and on top of the cheekbones.

M.A.C, Eye Pencil in 'Coffee,' $17, available at M.A.C.; Urban Decay, Moondust Palette in 'Lithium,' $49, available at Urban Decay; Marc Jacobs Beauty, Glow Stick Glistening Illuminator, $42, available at Sephora.

THE INSPO: CHARLI XCX

Charli XCX's foray in PC Music has transformed her beauty look into a punk version of Posh Spice's Spice Force Five bit from Spice World, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Tulve advises starting with a deep black pencil to fill the lid and lower lash line with pigment, adding the desired wing at the end. Use a Q-tip and micellar water to sharpen the edges. With a matte black shadow, set the lines. Pat a shimmery shadow along the inner corner, lower lash line, and water line and finish it all off with a black mascara. A nude lip with a ton of clear gloss applications will tie it all together.

M.A.C, Kohn Power Eye Pencil in 'Feline,' $17, available at M.A.C; Bioderma, Sensibo H20, $16.90, available at Amazon; Kat Von D, Alchemist Holographic Palette in 'Amethyst,' $32, available at Sephora.
