The Great Spring Lip Makeover

Three editor-approved styles to try now

by nylon x clinique

Spring cleaning doesn't begin and end with your home. It should translate into every aspect of your life: fashion, attitude, and, yes, beauty. Warmer days call for brighter looks. Sure, the fashion runways would beg to differ, but all those dark lip shades pack a wintry punch that simply won't do come spring. Light, bright, and simple is how we're spring cleaning our lipstick cabinet this season. It's out with the cold and in with the fresh and dewy.

Of course, it's not just lipsticks we're upgrading—it's how we take care of our lips, too. (We've found a life savior in Clinique's Sweet Pots™.) To help illustrate one of the beauty world's easiest upgrades, three NYLON staffers agreed to let makeup artist Tony Tulve take their winter beauty looks and update them for spring. The results are cheery and subtle, but impactful. The brighter the lip, the brighter your life, right?

Irina Grechko, Digital Content Editor

Sometimes all you need for a quick upgrade is a new product. For Grechko's spring look, Tulve swapped a vampy red lip for a cheery shade. To give it a more neutral feel, he first used a sugar scrub on the lips before applying a red-brown balm. A warm neutral eyeshadow was the applied across the eyelids, and a purple hue was added to the lower lashline. To complete the look, Tulve added a trusty winged eyeliner look, because you can never, ever, go wrong with a cat eye effect.

Before: Clinique, Clinique Pop Glaze™ Sheer Lip Colour + Primer in 'Licorice Pop,' $18, available at Clinique.

Keryce Henry, Associate Editor

Henry's spring look is all about the pops of color. Where her winter look was more subdued and natural, Tulve updated her beauty routine with blues and pinks. A muted blue eyeshadow was swept across her eyelids, that created a blue-gray effect when mixed with the first layer of neutral shadow. A bold pink lacquer was then added to top Henry's spring look off with a sheen. Talk about eye-catching.

Before: Clinique, Lid Pop™ in 'Cocoa Pop,' $17, available at Clinique; Clinique Skinny Stick in 'Black Silver,' $16.50, available at Clinique; Clinique Pop™ Lacquer Lip Colour + Primer in 'Nude Pop,' $18, available at Clinique.

Katherine Martinez, Director of E-Commerce

Bold is beautiful, but don't forget about the impact of an understated look. Tulve took Martinez's cooler look and warmed it up by applying a soft pink glaze straight to the lip. Before all that, though, he exfoliated the lips using Clinique's Sweet Pots™ sugar scrub. To carry that same warmth throughout the face, he traded dark eye makeup for warmer neutrals that come close to Martinez's skin tone and let the light pink take center stage.

Before: Clinique, Clinique Pop™ Lacquer Lip Colour + Primer in 'Lava Pop,' $18, available at Clinique; Skinny Stick in 'Mini Moss,' $16.50, available at Clinique.

After: Clinique, Clinique Sweet Pots™ Sugar Scrub & Lip Balm in 'Sweet Rose,' $19.50, available at Clinique; Clinique Pop Glaze™ Sheer Lip Colour + Primer in 'Sprinkle Pop,' $18, available at Clinique; Lid Pop™ in 'Cocoa Pop,' $17, available at Clinique; Lid Pop™ in 'Willow Pop,' $17, available at Clinique.
