Austin, as many residents will tell you, is not like the rest of Texas. It's a little oasis of the alternative and weird. And when South By Southwest rolls around for its annual music and media takeover in March, things get even weirder. (We mean that in the best way possible.)
Of course, the weather is a far cry from the sometimes hot, sometimes cold nature of the East Coast. So your wardrobe packing list is pretty much set to "warm." (This year, though, it looks like it's going to be hot, hot, hot.) What you pack in your carryall bag is key. After all, you do a lot of running around down in Austin and hardly venture back to your rented space until nightfall. You're going to want the tools for quick beauty touch-ups, a little private dance break, memory-making, and, of course, a solid bag to carry it all in. Here's our SXSW essentials kit.

You can never, ever go wrong with having a sketchbook in your bag. As editors, we use them to jot down quick interview Qs and observations. As fans, we'll collect autographs. The nostalgic element of putting things down in ink, too, is not lost on us. Do we even need to explain how necessary a phone case is? And as for the earbuds, once you try a nice pair of 'em, you can never go back to the tiny ones that come with your phone. Pack your favorites and bust 'em out when you need to escape into your head a little.
