Watch Tegan And Sara’s Quirky Video For “BWU”

Do you believe in love until death do you part?

Is there anything more soul crushing than watching a failed marriage proposal? Tegan and Sara bring that universal fear to life in their music video for "BWU," a cute acronym for the phrase "be with you."

Let the record show that the synth-pop sisters aren't even prepared with rings when they pop the big question, but that's not the point of this Clea DuVall-directed visual. (Surely, though, Beyoncé would be extremely disappointed that they didn't get the message when she said, "If you like it then you should have put on a ring on it.")

"I was happy when the Supreme Court ruling legalized same sex marriage in the U.S.A.," Sara Quin told Entertainment Weekly. "But I was also relieved that I could finally 'come out' as a person who actively dislikes the institution—specifically the assumption that by not participating in the ritual you are a deviant or unlikely to share the same common values as someone who does."

Even though both sisters were huge advocates for the same-sex marriage movement in the U.S. and Canada, Sara explained that she doesn't actually want to be married because she doesn't believe in the institutionalized sacrament behind it.

"I don't have any interest in that sort of social hierarchy, where if you're not married then your relationship is not as significant as people who are," she said. "I hate all of that. Now that I've fought for the right, and we've had success with the Supreme Court, I feel like it's important for me to be honest, too. There's strength in saying, 'I don't need a piece of paper or a ring or a wedding or photos to show how significant my commitment to a relationship is.'"
