THE READER: CASS BIRD

the photographer on her biggest art influencers.

by liza darwin

Even if you don't know her by name, it's impossible to miss Cass Bird's work. From Daria Werbowy's recent Maiyet movie to Sophomore's fashion films to Urban Outfitters' look books, the New York photographer transforms ad campaigns into raw, honest art that's woozily beautiful and tough to shake. Last month she debuted her new book Rewilding, a collection of images she took between 2009-2010 in Tennessee. To mark the release, we asked Bird to make a Top 5 list of her own most treasured photo books and artists.

Peggy Sirota, Guess Who

"I like how Peggy made all these iconic celebrities into anonymous personalities."

Mario Testino

"There is life, vitality, enthusiasm and joy in all of his images."

Herb Ritts,The Golden Hour

"These such an enviable beauty in his life that he shares in this book."

Bruce Weber

"He approaches portrait and fashion through what seems like a family dinner, or picnic. You get to experience a closeness to his subjects through his photographs."

Peter Lindbergh

"He was one of the 1st major fashion photographers I was exposed to who portrayed woman in a really sexy but strong, and sometimes masculine way."
