private icon: troop beverly hills

“shopping is our greatest thrill.”

by ray siegel

Before there was Cher Horowitz, there was Phyllis Nefler (played by Shelley Long)--the Beverly Hills housewife who used her daughter Hannah's (played by Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis) Wilderness Girl troop as a coping method for her divorce. Since shopping was her greatest skill, Nefler took girl scouting in a new direction. Her troop received merit badges for jewelry appraisal rather than learning to build fires in the woods. And since the woods wasn't exactly their scene, camping trips were relocated to the Beverly Hills Hotel. The girls were still learning to become fashion icons, but Long's ensembles took the cake, or in this case, "cookie" would be a more appropriate dessert to reference. On camping trips she wore a floor-length white fur coat and since she wouldn't be caught dead in her troop leader uniform, her tailor turned transformed it into a Burberry Prorsum-esque runway look. Though her troop leading did fulfill her, the divorce still took its toll, causing Nefler to indulge in way too many bottles of her drink of choice: Evian Natural Spring Water, who happens to have redesigned their iconic bottle for the first time in fourteen years. We'll raise our water bottles to Neffler and the rest of her troop in hopes for a sequel or any Shelley Long comeback for that matter. Until then, shop our dead-on, Wildernees girl-inspired looks. "Isn't nature fabulous, girls?"
