exclusive: elkin’s designers on the label’s new lookbook

+ the scoop on working with emma roberts.

Last week, LA label Elkin dropped the line's new fall lookbook, which came stocked with cool girl basics like always. But something else to note? These '90s-inspired dresses, rad jackets, and boxy tops were modeled by none other than Emma Roberts. The actress has been a longtime fan of the brand, sporting the company's ubiquitous banana tank top to Coachella. But according to designers Brit and Kara Smith, these guys go way back.

Just take it from Kara, who says, "Emma is our girl. Not only is she one of our closest friends (we always tell people the three of us are sisters, because we feel like sisters), but she was also the muse for our FW14 collection. It’s funny because when we started Elkin, we knew exactly who our girl was and what she was about… and now she has a face." It makes sense, especially given the fact that Roberts' easy-going style IRL combined with her gothy wardrobe on American Horror Story is almost the exact fusion of Elkin's fall '14 collection.

As Brit notes, "The three of us always talk about how we love a dark '90s witchy look mixed with a classic '60s French-inspired boarding school girl sort of look. So we merged these two looks for this collection." And in terms of the inspo itself? Think Stevie Nicks, Elizabeth and Jessica from Sweet Valley High, and, yep, Madison from AHS. "Having spent our high school years at an all girls' Catholic Boarding School in Los Angeles, and also loving Emma's character on American Horror Story: Coven, Kara and I really drew inspiration from that."
