News of the Day:
+ Oprah Winfrey is the first major name to join the cast of Ava DuVernay's adaptation of A Wrinkle In Time for Disney. Her character, Mrs. Which, is one of the three figures guiding the children in the story (so basically what she's done for us our entire lives). Winfrey is currently filming The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks on HBO.
+ MTV announced that it will premiere True Life: We Are Orlando on August 15. The episode documents four survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting on their journey toward physical and emotional recovery. Additionally, MTV will release a digital series to introduce each of the survivors.
+ A new study has confirmed that being transgender is not a mental disorder. (Shocker!) Though it's a common stigma, researchers found that the vast number of transgender individuals seeking psychiatric care is a result of mental distress caused by factors like rejection and hate crimes.
+ STATE Bags is giving back as part of their fall 2016 collection with Shopbop by hosting a bag drop event in Harlem, New York, to benefit The Children's Aids Society. Each child receives a STATE backpack filled with school supplies.
+ You probably haven't heard of the smartest Marvel character—yet. At San Diego Comic-Con, the comic giant announced that their most intelligent hero is Lunella Lafayette, the 9-year old black protagonist of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. The series is another huge win for representation in comic books, and Lafayette makes one badass she-ro.
