8 up-and-coming designers to watch

your new favorite labels, right this way

    by · May 30, 2015

In an endless sea of fast-fashion chains and shiny, overwhelmingly massive department stores, the world of lesser-known, tiny indie designers can be hard to find.

So when NYLON went to Vicenza, a small city in Italy, for the Origin Passion and Beliefs show, we made sure to pay attention to the newer labels who were doing things a little differently. Origin is a fashion trade show put together by Not Just A Label, and it brings together up-and-coming designers with expert Italian manufacturers to encourage them to work with one another—which helps the economy while continuing the Italian tradition of locally produced luxury goods. Amidst the demonstrations of how silk is made, people handcrafting leather boots, and avant-garde accessories, we found new brands that blew our minds with their creativity and uniqueness.

If you’re looking to invest in a bag that no one else will have—and that you’ll also love forever—check out Alpha Cruxis. Since 2013, the brand has been handcrafting these structural, modern-yet-timeless leather accessories in striking, geometric shapes. The pieces themselves call to mind goth-inspired gemstones, and they’ve got that whole minimalism thing on lock while still being completely edgy.

NYC-based label Chromat makes undergarments inspired by the architecture of cityscapes. More structural than functional, but still stunning, it’s sexy cyborg swimwear and lingerie for your wildest robot dreams.

This NYC-based womenswear label won’t really be under the radar for long, special thanks to fans like Solange Knowles, Lady Gaga, and Michelle Obama (maybe you’ve heard of one of them?). The elegant, free-spirited, sophisticated line is undoubtedly poised to become fashion’s next big thing.

Whimsically dream-like, the designs of this Uruguay-born designer are some of the most imaginative we’ve seen. That doesn’t mean they’re impractical, though: These tiny frocks balance magical with wearable, making them pretty much ideal.

This ethereal clothing line from Prague has some serious medieval fairy vibes going for it. And while that does lean into boho territory, the clothes—and specifically, the newest spring/summer collection—boast a rare sophistication. The brand’s founder got his start as a ballet dancer, and that sense of movement and discipline is evident in his designs.

Hailing from Moscow, the core of this brand is over-sized, structural, and vibrant designs—the kind of statement-making clothes that are comfortable and eye-catching.
