Hayley Kiyoko Is Writing A Gay Romance Novel

Girls Like Girls will expand the universe of Kiyoko's most famous song.

Hayley Kiyoko is taking fan fiction to a whole new level. The singer is expanding the universe of her hit “Girls Like Girls,” with a queer coming-of-age romance novel based on the song.

“Girls Like Girls” was a coming out anthem in a time when it wasn’t so common for pop stars — especially women pop stars — to be openly queer.

In an interview with Billboard, she recalled a studio session with her co-songwriters, who asked her: What’s something that scares you? “They were like, ‘All right, if you felt fearless and weren’t scared, what would you say?’” she said. “And that’s where ‘Girls Like Girls’ came from.”

Kiyoko took to Twitter to announce her first novel. “Building our second story, ripping all your floors out. I’m very honored to announce Girls Like Girls the novel coming next Summer,” she wrote.

“Ever since I released the music video for ‘Girls Like Girls’ [in 2015], it has been a dream of mine to tell the whole story of Coley and Sonya,” Kiyoko says in a statement. “I am so excited to explore these characters further in a novel – to really get inside their heads, and their hearts, and to take readers on their quest for love.”

According to a release, the novel will tell the “messy beginnings” of the love story about will explore why “learning to love hard, no matter what—or who—you want.” After all, as the song goes: “Girls like girls like boys do/ Nothing new.”

Girls Like Girls will be published in May 2023 by Wednesday Books, the young adult imprint of St. Martin’s Publishing Group . In the meantime, you can pre-order the novel here.
