The Biggest Takeaways From This Year's MTV VMA Nominations

The 2019 MTV Video Music Awards nominations are in. Seasoned pop stars Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift are naturally leading this year's nomination pool with 10 nods each, and going head-to-head in multiple categories, including Video and Song of the Year. Billie Eilish, who isn't as seasoned but has built up a sturdy (and beloved) body of work, is right behind with nine nominations this year.
Then there's Lil Nas X, which leads me to the two biggest takeaways from this year's picks:
The one-hit wonder is not dead.
With one song, the irresistible bop that is "Old Town Road," the queer rapper has scooped up a whopping eight nominations, including Best New Artists, Song of the Year, and Video of the Year. He shares many of his nominations with featured artist Billy Ray Cyrus, who hopped on the record and gave Lil Nas X a co-sign when Billboard tried to shun him from the Country chart. I'm not prematurely labeling him as a one-hit wonder but, even if Lil Nas X never tops "Old Town Road," the accolades that he's already received are proof of how much one single can do.
It's time to take K-Pop seriously.
If you've been holding your breath waiting for all those K-pop artists you've never heard of to stop trending on Twitter, you might run out of oxygen soon. Following K-Pop groups breaking into the 2019 festival season, the VMAs have introduced a completely new and well-deserved category, Best K-Pop, which includes favorites like BTS and BLACKPINK among the six nominated.
