AlunaGeorge, Dreezy + Leikeli47 Teamed Up To Create A Fire New Track
“Mean What I Mean”
From Blood Orange’s Freetown Sound to Mabel’s “Thinking of You,” we’ve been blessed with a ton of amazing anthems this summer. Now, AlunaGeorge is getting in on the action with her new song, “Mean What I Mean.”
Released on BBC’s Annie Mac’s Hottest Record In the World, the song is the type of rhythmic electro-pop banger that we’ve become accustomed to getting from the British duo. This time around, though, they tapped two rising rappers, Dreezy and Leikeli47, to bring it to another level with explosive verses. At first listen, the girl-power song is a total dance floor jam. But with lyrics like “I mean what I mean when I say so/ Not trying to be mean when I say no/ So trust me, I mean what I mean,” it’s a celebration of female empowerment and a reminder about the nature of consent.
“It’s a very genuine place I’m singing from here,” Aluna Francis told Mac. “I was in a situation; I said ‘No.’ The person I was with was like, ‘No, you mean “yes.” That’s what you mean. I know what you mean, and you mean “yeah,” cause you’re just playing hard to get.’”
