barbie can finally wear flats

because she’s suffered long enough

by jenny lee

If there's anything trademark about Barbie, it's her perpetually arched feet, engineered in such a way so they fit into heels as perfectly as Cinderella fit into her glass slipper. But with all the glamour of heels aside, we can't imagine how much this must freakin' hurt. We call it a night after a couple hours in our own heels so imagine how Barbie must feel?

Luckily for Barbie—and the millions of girls influenced by her physical image—Mattel is releasing a new "Barbie Fashionistas" line that gives Barbie adjustable ankles that support flat-soled shoes. Finally, we are no longer forced to believe the lie that Barbie wears only heels and is still able to smile that widely.

In addition to this exciting change, Barbie Fashionistas also boast eight different skin tones, 14 different facial sculpts, 18 eye colors, 22 hairstyles, and 23 hair colors so that they're a little more...how can we say it, akin to real life. It's definitely a step forward for the doll, and we love that we'll see a Barbie to represent more races, ethnicities, and styles of people.

Now all we need is a Barbie who can fix her own computers and one that represents a more average body type.
