photography and beauty collide in the prettiest makeover book around.

by liza darwin

Since 1994, Francois Nars has made a name for himself in the beauty world for his striking runway looks, clean aesthetic, and...oh yeah, one very famous shade of blush.

With his new book, Makeup Your Mind: Express Yourself, the French makeup guru and founder of the eponymous brand gives a lesson in recreating these iconic looks for everyone.

The followup to the 2001 edition, which featured NARS faces like Karen Elson, Maggie Rizer, and Naomi Campbell, the new version spotlights students, writers, artists and more- proving that these beauty looks really can work on regular people (read: non-models). With three sections titled "Play," "Perfect" and "Polish," Nars gives a photographic makeover using transparent sheets and before-and-after shots.

And although he lays out tips for achieving everything from a wine lip to smoky eyes to au naturale, the main message is clear from the beginning: even with rules, you should still break them. After all, experimenting is half the fun.

With art direction by Fabien Baron, it's not surprising that this book will look good sitting on your coffee table. The best part is that after reading it, you can bet you'll look gorgeous, too.
