Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Cut To The Feeling” Is Here To Save Pop Music

And your summer playlist

There’s a ton of good new music out today. We wrote about a lot of it here, here, and here. These songs are all worth listening to, yes, but if you only have time for one, it should be Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Cut To The Feeling.”

Confession time: I've dismissed Jepsen's artistry ever since “Call Me, Maybe.” Despite her reinventing herself and emerging as one of the more exciting pop artists out right now, and despite everyone trying to convince me of such. But, oh, have I seen the light, and what a bright light it is.

Turns out, Jepsen’s new song is from the soundtrack for the forthcoming animated children’s film Leap! Of course, it is. It sounds like it. Meaning, it’s over-the-top happy, fantastical, and its primary purpose is to entertain. It’s dance music personified with lyrics like, “I wanna cut through the clouds, break the ceiling/ I wanna dance on the roof, you and me alone” Song of the summer? Game, set, match, Carly.

Katy Perry might be trying to make purposeful pop happen, and this isn’t that. Practically perfect pop, though, it definitely is. Now, about those other 50 tunes
