Charli XCX Directs 18-Year-Old Singer Raye’s Video “I, U, Us”

The “Boom Clap” singer gets behind the camera this time around

Pop sensation Charli XCX is already paying it forward to other British artists. According to Vulture, the 24-year-old multi-hyphenate directed up-and-coming singer Raye's new video for her song "I, U, Us," which Charli XCX also helped co-write.

The sultry Raye belts out the electric breakup ballad while skating on an ice rink with a squad of boys in tow. With the help of her raspy voice and youthful style—already being compared to Rihanna's—the 18-year-old rising star channels both angsty and sexy vibes simultaneously.

“We had the most fun, we were jumping around in the studio like little kids when we wrote ‘I, U, Us,'" Raye told The FADER. "We got a day in to write together and went in hard and wrote four tunes in one day. 'I, U, Us' was one of them that we did with a producer called Fred and another sick artist called Noonie Bao."

Charli XCX, who excitedly shared the video on her social accounts, elaborated on the process. "When Raye asked me to direct this video I was so down," she said. "She’s one of my favorite people to collaborate with right now. She’s a total star and an amazing subject to work with. I love her and really enjoyed making this video with her.”

Raye goes on to describe the girl-power anthem: "The song is me empowering myself, and making myself feel bigger and better than the person who tried to make me feel small. I was chatting with Charli and she had a vision for the video so it was obvious to me that she should be the one to bring that to life. It’s about me feeling free and letting loose with my boys, and Charli nailed it.”

Get ready to have the single's repeating hook: "I... U... Us/ Never, never, never again!" for the rest of the day, because this is one catchy track. Raye (real name Rachel Keen), who hails from South London, has already signed with Universal Music Group’s Polydor Records imprint, and with a debut EP titled Welcome To The Winter under her belt, seems ready to take over the music scene with what she describes as a “pop, R&B, electro" sound. Her second EP, aptly titled Second arrived on August 11 and includes "I, U, Us," along with "Ambition," featuring Stormzy.
