if you can’t beat red wine mouth, join it.

by rebecca willa davis

I'm not gonna lie: I get red wine mouth. Like, really bad. One sip out of a glass of Pinot Noir or Cabernet and my lips instantly get that deep red tint that starts at the center and creeps out the corner. When I down an entire glass, it's like someone painted my lips with purple Sharpie--and no matter how many times I splash water or use a scrub, it's there until the next morning.

It kind of drives me crazy, but seeing as I'm not about to be cutting it out of my diet anytime soon, my only other option is to figure out a way to make it work for me. And thanks to Christina Ricci, I've got a good idea.

To fight the red wine lip, you must be the red wine lip; that is to say, beat it at its own game by going out with a dark burgundy lip color. Whether worn with a simple, clean face during the day or a little bit of smokiness at night, you've got a perfect pairing--and if that vino-dye starts to set in, just apply a bit more.

Here are three red wine-inspired shades to try:

MINT IT: Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in Sultry - $8.99

Not only does this new "balm" (I consider it more like a lip crayon) go on surprisingly opaque, but it's got a minty scent that will cover up dreaded wine breath.

STICK IT: Dior Diorific Lipstick in Magic Wine - $30

This lipstick is staying put, no matter how many glasses you down. Promise.

MOISTURIZE IT: Smashbox MegaTint Longwear in Mulberry - $20

This super-moisturizing formula promises takes care of dry, flaky lips--which, let's be honest, can be worse than a morning-after wine hangover.
