Cyndi Lauper first tackled Prince's "When You Were Mine" in 1983. She even featured the cover on her debut album She's So Unusual. Now, more than three decades later, she's still owning it.
During the first of her two New York City shows this month, Lauper performed the classic. Rather than go the grandiose route, Lauper's tribute was refined. She let the song do the talking, sending the Beacon Theater audience down a blissful nostalgic trip. It was a nice poppy break from her new country material.
Speaking to Billboard magazine a day after Prince's death, Lauper explained how he was a mentor of sorts to her. "He was always brilliant," she said. "He was trying to explain to me how to do it." She remembered he would always go to her shows, but would never go back to speak with her. She added, "I just didn't know what a fan he was."
