Beauty
it’s showtime
a behind-the-scenes looks at what it takes to be red carpet-ready (featuring elisabeth moss, laura carmichael, and more)!
As soon as stars hit the red carpet during the award show season, it's as if they woke up looking that way: dress perfect, makeup perfect, hair perfect, smile perfect.
But, as with all things, it's not like they rolled out of bed looking that way (no, not even when Kristen Stewart does that, even though she might want you to think that). It took a village...or at least, an entire team working furiously.
So while we've shown you the end results of all that hard work for the Golden Globes, we also asked our favorite makeup artists and hair stylists to give us a peek into life pre-Globes. From impromptu spa treatments to quick trims while resting on a hotel room chair, it's not exactly glamorous, but it's certainly a far cry from your average girl's life. Check out the gallery for behind-the-scenes snaps featuring Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss, Downton Abbey's Laura Carmichael, American Horror Story's Lily Rabe, and Scandal's Katie Lowes.

"Elisabeth and I agree the makeup should be fresh and minimal with a pop of color to complement the beaded black J. Mendel dress--she loved the idea of a stain over lipstick! I used Stila Acai Crush for the perfect stain, layered with Burt's Bees Moisturizing Lip Balm."

"We wanted to keep it modern, fresh, and sexy for Katie, so we went with a more dramatic smokey eye. Playing with the gold from her dress but giving it depth with a blue smoke--try Nars cream shadow in El Dorado (a gorgeous gold bronze) and then Stila's In The Light palette to create a smokey eye."

"It was crazy, she flew in Sunday morning and [left that night], shooting American Horror Story on Monday in New Orleans! We had plenty of time, though, and all had a great time picking the dress and doing the beauty. I used Oribe Sculpting Cream to prep the roots and [then] used a few rollers in the mohawk section."

"The stylist Penny Lovell had this cool black and white Viktor & Rolf dress and we thought a strong eye would balance the black out nicely. Laura and I had been liking some previous eye looks I had done, so we were excited that that was the chosen feature to play up! Everyone was open to incorporating color on the eye, which I always love."

"For an award show I like to spend time massaging and misting the face. Then I check the eyebrows, cleaning and shaping where needed. I applied under-eye depuffing patches and lip balm while hair and nails got started."

"I was inspired by the nail polish color that was chosen, a sparkly mix of grays, blues, and green. The colors made me think of abalone shell."

Tina Turnbow's favorite part about working with Laura? "Her excited and fun energy--and her great taste. I felt she had trust in whatever I was doing. Her kind and very cool nature ruled!"
