Hellogoodbye
what really goes down on tour with paramore…
Oh hey, have you heard? Hellogoodbye is back! It's been several years since we last heard from Forrest Kline and his crew, but now the California band has returned with their new album Everything Is Debatable (insert your own "hello, goodbye" joke in here). They're in the midst of a massive tour with Metric and Paramore, and fresh off their packed show last night at Madison Square Garden, Kline stopped by NYLON to talk about his "sexy pop" guilty pleasures and whether or not Hayley Williams will really install a karaoke machine on the tour bus. Get the scoop below, and see their exclusive tour diary, below!
Was last night your first time performing at MSG?
Yeah, it was actually my first time ever being there! It was such a fun show, though, everyone was so giddy.
How is it, touring with Paramore and Metric?
It's been great--we did a show with Paramore about a year ago in Hawaii, and so we hung out a little bit and get on great. Paramore fans are so cool, they're intense in the best way possible. They're obsessed, but they're not closed off-not like Hanson fans! Those Hanson fans, they've got one thing on their minds.
What's your pre-show routine?
We'll always have a shot of whiskey and a glass of wine, which is a weird combo, but it works. Then we'll just crank the tunes and turn off the lights and we kind of just have this private....dance. [Laughs] We do it for a good 15-20 minutes before, and it's changed everything for us. The secret to having a good show is a drink and a dance!
What's your packing strategy?
I have no strategy; I feel like I never end up wearing half the stuff I pack. For some reason I always end up having four things I keep rotating. My tip is usually just "buy it when you get there." Why bother packing?! Just shop.
That's the way to do it. Now that you have a new album and everything, did you feel like you had to re-introduce yourself to the audience in a way?
That's happening. There's definitely people who left the picture but for them--and it's like, we took a hiatus, and now we're back and we're on the same page again.
If Hellogoodbye could soundtrack any movie, what type of film would it be?
Oh that's hard! Probably a good coming-of-age movie, something a little bit peppy...maybe a comedy. A little young rom-com, like a jovial Stand By Me.
What are your three guilty pleasure songs?
I don't believe in guilty pleasures, but I like a lot of cheesy, sexy pop. [Laughs] My top three: "Toxic," by Britney Spears, Usher, and some Rihanna.
Those are the epitome of "sexy pop."
Oh yeah! All you need to do is take a shower and listen to Usher, and you're good to go.
When you're not performing, what do you guys and Paramore do?
All we've really done is just sat around and drank and just chatted. We haven't really "done" anything yet--although Hayley has been talking about getting bus karaoke. We haven't done it yet, but we have three weeks left so maybe we can make it happen. We've got Cranium, though. [Laughs] So we can play Cranium...are board games cool, guys?
