Watch The Trailer For ‘Raw,’ One Of The Year’s Most Original Horror Films
Out on March 10
The trailer for the upcoming horror movie Raw leaves plenty to the imagination, and that’s probably for the best. When the movie screened at the Toronto International Film Festival last month, at least two audience members passed out and had to be tended to by paramedics thanks to some unflinching gore. For her feature film debut, French director Julia Ducournau used practical and ultra-realistic effects to tell the gruesome story of a teenage girl literally discovering the pleasures of the flesh.
The movie follows the 16-year-old vegetarian Justine (Garance Marillier, in a stunning performance) who heads off to veterinary school where she encounters boys, mean girls, parties, and all the other trappings that make being a teenager exhilarating and awful at the same time. During the school’s extreme hazing rituals, which you glimpse in the trailer, Justine is forced to eat raw meat, which awakens the cannibal in her. Yep. On the surface, this is a movie about a teenage girl who eats people, but in the deft hands of Ducournau, it becomes so much more. "I wanted a way more direct way to portray female sexuality that is for me extremely true: the desire to have sex and desire for the body without any question around that,” Ducournau told us last week. See what she’s talking about when the movie comes out on March 10. Watch it on an empty stomach.
