John Mayer Made A Meme-Worthy, Green Screen-Filled Music Video

Get ready for the GIFs in three, two, one…

John Mayer promised us a content-filled video for his new song “New Light,” and oh did he deliver.

“I needed to make a video for ‘New Light’ but nobody could agree on a budget,” the singer explained before dropping the link. “So I went to a place downtown and made this with a company that usually does birthday and Bar Mitzvah videos.” It shows! Situated in front of a bunch of different green screens, Mayer bounces from Washington D.C. to the pyramids in Egypt. He’s dressed in normcore clothing and alternates between corny dance moves, over-the-shoulder glances, and dramatized walking. It’s reminiscent of Kanye West’s intentionally corny “Bound 2” video which, he’s explained, involved him taking a bunch of “white trash t-shirts” and making them into a video. Similarly, Mayer took everything that was bad about the '80s and ‘90s and made it into Premium Content.

It definitely makes us look at the singer in a… new light (!), one that’s bright and promising and really dorky. He’s John Mayer, and he’s ready to be a star—and we’re ready for that to happen… again.
