Karen Walker Is Here To Change The Way You Look At Eyewear
Her new collection, Shadow Play, is basically makeup-less contouring
When it comes to putting out a new collection of eyewear, designer Karen Walker begins by thinking about what boundary-pushing styles and concepts she hasn’t done yet. “Our process always starts with us asking ourselves what’s new and what is it that our fans haven’t gotten from us yet,” she says. That’s why you’ll find a collection of new and inventive—albeit slightly quirky—styles season after season.
Back in spring, Walker changed the way we looked at eyewear—no longer was a pair of shades just a form of chic UV protection, but rather a form of makeup—when she teamed up with M.A.C for her Eyeshadow collection. The line consisted of softly tinted or smoked-out, rimless frames that essentially replaced our need for pastel shadows and smoky eyes for spring.
Now she’s back with her latest for fall, once again highlighting eyewear as a beauty tool—this time, focusing on contouring. Shadow Play is comprised of softly colored lenses and in-your-face acetate and metal frames that add dimension to the face and eyes by way of casting shadows. “We’re known for interesting shapes, and we just wanted to emphasize that idea,” Walker adds. They’re shades fit for the “interesting girl looking for interesting ideas."
The full collection drops today at Karen Walker, as well as at Net-A-Porter, Barneys, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Below, check out the Harry Were-shot campaign, which involves no makeup or hair styling, allowing the shadows to do all the work.
