mani monday: mac nail transformations

bringing it back to the not-so-basics.

by Yasmeen Gharnit

After what has essentially been a three-year-long affair with nail art, we’ve seen it all: rhinestones, 3-D puffs, and more nail wraps than we’d ever have the time to apply. And quite frankly, it’s time to press pause and go back to the basics. The only problem? Nobody wants to end up with the same polish as the soccer mom next door, not even the soccer mom herself. Luckily, MAC’s new Nail Transformations Collection hits stores this Thursday.

The collection sets out to do exactly what it claims: transform your favorite polish (any shade, any brand) with quick topcoat. Choose one of nine permanent toppers, or layer them on top of one another to create a customized look. You can start with the Texturize clear leather effect top coat for a night out and add the Shadow sheer blackening top coat over that for the after party. Or pile the Gold Pearl sheer gold pearl transformer over a neutral shade for some low-key sparkle.

Fashion and celebrity manicurist Marian Newman—who has worked with Moschino, Alexander McQueen, and Dior, just to name a few—teamed up with MAC to create this game-changing collection, which will add four crème colors later in the summer. MAC has also widened the bottle’s application brush so that even nail-art novices can generate professional results.

Buy them Thursday at MAC stores and online.
