make up like marilyn

how to get the screen goddess’ retro glam.

Marilyn Monroe is not just a screen legend, she's a style icon and our perennial beauty queen. Her bleach blonde locks and red-lipped look have oft been copied by starlets of every generation, just as her sweet and sultry disposition.

In honor of the icon's birthday yesterday, we pulled together everything a girl should know to recreate some of the star's beauty signatures. So get your rouge ready, because it's Marilyn time.

Step one in Monroe-ifying oneself is lashes. Now let's say you weren't blessed with an innate cat eye of thick, long, black hairs--these Make Up Forever False Eyelashes ($16) will help you fake it 'til you make it.

Perfect eyebrow arches are a must if you're channeling Monroe. Thankfully Tweezerman's Mini Brow Rescue Kit ($25) has everything you need to repair your arches on the go.

Let's talk about eyeliner. Monroe was famous for her slinky cat eye, and the best way to recreate it now is with Benefit's They're Real! Push-Up Liner ($24). Our beauty assistant, Jade Taylor, shared her tips for the perfect cat eye in our June/July issue: "Trace your lash line from the inner to outer corner, then create a wing by starting below the end of the brow and connecting it with your outer lid."

If you want glowing skin like Monroe's there's only one way to get it: sunscreen. We recommend La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra Light Sunscreen Lotion Spray SPF60 ($36).

What's more Marilyn than a red lip?! Get fancy with your red with Guerlain's Rouge G de Guerlain Lipstick in Geneva ($51).

Of course no red-lipped look is complete without matching red nail polish. Get an ultra-glam look with Marc Jacobs Beauty Enamored Hi-Shine Lacquer in 134 Lola ($18).

Monroe's shiny, glossy curls were her hair signature--a look that many modern starlets try to replicate. You can get the look with Kerastase's Gloss Appeal Spray ($25), a styling spray that leaves your hair shiny, pretty, and holds it in place. Yeah, it might be magic.

While we're talking about hair, blondes should be sure to keep their locks Monroe-hued with John Freida's Everlasting Blonde Color Preserving Shampoo ($5.09).

Although bright red lipstick was her signature, Monroe experimented with other shades, like this chocolate-y rouge. Try the look with Kevyn Aucoin The Expert Lipcolor in Bloodroses ($35).

Or go nude with Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylo in Nude #2.

Monroe loved to wear Chanel No. 5 Parfum ($200)--so much that the brand recently released ad images starring her.

No Monroe makeup lesson would be complete without a beauty mark. Get your own with a dot of Sephora Collection Waterproof Eyeliner ($12).

Smile! The secret to teeth as white as Monroe's is Crest 3D Whitestrips ($55.99).
