Another movie adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth is about the last thing anyone needs. But let’s give Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, and director Justin Kurzel some credit—their version looks astounding. What sounds like a literal adaptation of the bard’s play, at least dialogue-wise, is a stylistically ambitious epic that looks as dark as Game of Thrones and as epic as Lord of the Rings.
The movie recieved high praise following its Cannes premiere—Variety called it a “Shakespeare pic for the ages—albeit one surely too savage for the classroom.” And Marion Cotillard was pretty much born to play the vile Lady Macbeth, one of the greatest villains of all time. Catch it later this year, and don’t forget your Cliff Notes.
