MOVIE REVIEW: DELICACY

audrey tautou stars in this french romance.

We admit: we've harbored a longstanding girl crush on Audrey Tautou ever since the actress's breakout role as the title character in 2001's irreverent hit Amelie. But although she's made a career on her whimsical quirkiness, she's leaving some of it behind in her new film, the French-language romantic drama Delicacy (La Delicatesse). This time around, she's a little less chirpy and more rooted in reality.

In the film (which is based on the novel by David Foenkinos), Tautou is Nathalie, an office worker who has the perfect relationship. However, after her husband dies in an accident she suddenly becomes sullen, obsessed with her job and losing her social life entirely.

Before long she starts dating Markus, her Swedish coworker. It's an odd coupling (her husband was tall, dark and handsome, whereas Markus is shy and awkward), but the two work through their emotional baggage to see if they can find love again.

Whereas Delicacy may lack the happy-go-lucky cheerfulness we've loved about Tautou's prior movies, here's the good news: her wardrobe is just as adorable and covetable as always. If that's not reason enough to check it out, we don't know what is....

In theaters in New York; opening soon nationwide.
