Well, whaddaya know. Another month is upon us, and to mark the occasion, Netflix is doing that thing where they mercifully add a bunch of titles to their streaming service, and mercilessly take some away. We're excited for the new original series (yes, another one) Narcos, mainly because Boyd Holbrook is finally getting the starring vehicle he deserves, but also because the escape of El Chapo in Mexico has suddenly renewed our interest in the war on drug cartels and the mythology surrounding those who lead them (in the case of Narcos, it's Pablo Escobar).
If quietly devastating performances are your thing, then mark August 11 on your calender, which is when the Dardennes brothers' Two Days, One Night debuts. Marion Cotillard, in one of the best performances of her career, plays a woman who, after just losing her job, fights to get it back. We cannot recommend this movie more. Also in the department of showcase performances is Welcome to Me (August 6), which features the latest addition to Kristen Wiig's ever-growing gallery of oddball characters. For those of you down with overlooked, high-concept romantic comedies, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (August 16) features the highly unlikely pairing of Steve Carrell and Keira Knightley who form a special bond at the dawn of the apocalypse. It's an affecting movie that deserves a bigger audience than it found.
On the flip side, Netflix will be removing M. Night Shyamalan's underrated modern classic, Unbreakable, and a small indie that made a blip on the radar when it was released in 1997, Titanic. Our hearts will not go on.
