premiere: coastgaard “oval lawn”

A little vitamin C…

by Josh Madden

For anyone who grew up watching Beastie Boys and Foo Fighters videos in the '90s, the new visual that accompanies Coastgaard's "Oval Lawn" is a sweet return of funny, slightly creepy music videos done right. The faux orange juice commercial (which includes a myriad of awkward situations and the fellas in some incredibly tiny shorts) is a welcome change from slick camera work and cool guy posturing rock bands. The band has sort of a Shins-meets-Pinback organic vibe with an upbeat feel, and this Weezer-ish depiction of them sold us. The song is not only catchy, but all in all, this visual extinguishes the idea of any hip-pretense.

The band, collectively fans of The Beach Boys, Bowie, The Ventures, Cream, Pavement, The Pixies, and Neutral Milk Hotel, basically make the amalgamation of the catchiest indie-pop we've heard since Ben Kweller's Sha Sha. You can hear (and purchase) their newest self titled LP on their Bandcamp page HERE and keep up with their tour info on their Facebook HERE. If you live in or near New York city[,] the fellas have a show at Pianos on December 2nd--we'll see ya there!
