Sam Smith Sums Up Unrequited Love

in the coolest way possible

by Yasmeen Gharnit

If his debut album In The Lonely Hour proved one thing, it's that Sam Smith isn't solely relying on his vocal prowess. In just ten tracks—all of which he had a hand in writing—Smith explores 21st century love and its complexities (from one-night stands to infedelity and heartbreak). His latest video, for his track "Like I Can," may not directly illustrate these issues in the same way as "Stay With Me" and "I'm Not The Only One," but rather considers the concept of unrequited love as a communal one. The black and white video shows Smith and a pack of smartly dressed guys dancing in alleyways, trailing fire escapes, and throwing back shots because after all, when you're feeling a little lonely, the best people to rely on are your closest friends.
