Serena Williams Says She Felt Like She Wasn’t A Good Mom
In a candid post detailing her postpartum struggles
Serena Williams got refreshingly real about the struggles that come with being a new mom on Instagram.
“Last week was not easy for me,” she wrote alongside a photo of herself. “Not only was I accepting some tough personal stuff, but I just was in a funk. Mostly, I felt like I was not a good mom.” Williams says that, according to several articles she read, the postpartum emotions she's feeling can last up to three years if not addressed. “I like communication best,” she continued. “Talking things through with my mom, my sisters, my friends let me know that my feelings are totally normal.”
It’s also totally normal to feel like you’re not doing enough for your baby, she went on to say. That goes for any mom but is particularly true for someone also balancing being one of the greatest athletes of all time. “I work a lot, I train, and I’m trying to be the best athlete I can be,” Williams wrote.
She concluded with a message for all the mothers out there dealing with similar struggles. “Whether stay-at-home or working, finding a balance with kids is a true art,” she says. “You are the true heroes.”
