First things first: I rarely buy music. One of the coolest parts of being an editor is the opportunity to listen to new releases before they drop, so it's an unusual occasion when I buy something I haven't previewed first. But when it came to hearing Sky Ferreira's debut album Night Time, My Time, I whipped out my credit card bright and early this morning without thinking twice (it's only $6.99 on iTunes, FYI!). And if you ask me, it was totally worth it.
To say the 21-year-old's debut LP is a labor of love would be a massive understatement. She's been in the business since she was 15, and finally, finally has made material her way and on her own terms. Many of the twelve songs were written and recorded within the span of a month--and it's a sense of urgency that translates to the music, especially in songs like "Ain't Your Right" and "Nobody Asked Me (If I Was Okay)." Overflowing with raw heart and brimming with sassy attitude--this is a girl who's not taking crap from anyone anymore--the result is irresistible stuck-in-your-head pop, but with a message.
The singer has come a long way since her 2010 NYLON TV episode, trading bubblegum pop for lyrics that deal with everything from self-reflection to rebellion to rejection. But you know what? Her style has actually stayed pretty consistent over the years, mostly because Sky Ferreira staples like miniskirts, rock tees, and moto jackets never go out of style.
