The ‘Southside With You’ Trailer Is A Glimpse At The Young Obamas Falling In Love

From first love to first lady

One of the most intriguing films to come out of this year's Sundance was Southside With You, an intimate look at the first date between Barack and Michelle Obama. We all know the heights to which they soared once they found each other, but this film asks the question, how exactly did they find each other?

No one quite knew what to expect from a film about the early days of a sitting president, but the buzz out of Park City was wildly positive, and centered around the winning performances of Parker Sawyers as Barack Obama, and Tika Sumpter as Michelle Obama, who at the time was Michelle Robinson. Now that we finally get our first look at the film via a brand new trailer, it's easy to see why there's so much hype surrounding this most unusual biopic.

As for whether or not the Obamas are aware of the film's existence, according to its director, Richard Tanne, they are. "They are excited," he said during a recent Q&A, citing reliable sources. "And they are also a little baffled by its existence.”

Southside With You hits theaters August 19, but you can watch the trailer above, if for no other reason than knowing that you and the Obamas probably watched the same trailer today.
