The ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Trailer: The Robert Downey Jr. Show

Iron Man is all over this thing

by Ben Barna

Now that Spider-Man is back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe where he belongs, the patriarch of said universe, Tony Stark, is always nearby. And lo and behold, in the new trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Robert Downey Jr. is almost as much of a presence as the newest Peter Parker, Tom Holland. There’s all your typical Spider-Man hijinx: balancing homework with crime fighting, having your best friends discover your secret identity, dealing with unrequited love, and trying to save the city from a dude dressed as a mechanical vulture. (That would be Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes, aka The Vulture).

The added twist here is that this Parker uses a technologically advanced suit that was given to him by Stark. Desperate for Stark’s approval and wanting nothing more than to be a part of the Avengers, Spider-Man gets in over his head when he tries to prevent an attack on the Staten Island Ferry, only to be bailed out by Iron Man. “I’m nothing without this suit,” Parker tells Stark when Stark asks for it back. “If you’re nothing without this suit then you shouldn’t have it,” Stark tells him. The rest of the trailer shows Spider-Man trying to save the day with only a makeshift suit, proving to himself, and to us, that the real hero lies within. Point taken.

Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters on July 7.
