The Official ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Trailer Paints A Grim Picture
“Better never means better for everyone”
The Constitution has been suspended in Gilead, the dystopia in Margaret Atwood's best-selling novel The Handmaid's Tale. The birth rates are down, the environment is crumbling, and Fundamentalist regime governs. It's not similar to our current political climate per se, but the anxiety feels much the same. Hulu Original's adaptation of the story truly could not have come at a more poignant time.
Elisabeth Moss takes center stage in the series' official trailer, giving us background as to what has befallen Atwood's fictional society. After her child is taken from her, Moss' character's name changes to Offred as she is to become a Handmaid, a child bearer for the barren aristocratic women. Gilead is in a state of terror and surveillance, where the haves take from the have not's, where a "better" life is only better for a select few. The rest merely provide, until they stop, embolden themselves, and resist.
Moss is joined by OITNB's Samira Wiley and Gilmore Girls' Alexis Bledel.
The first three episodes of The Handmaid's Tale premiere April 26 on Hulu.
