Jude Law Is Basically Frank Underwood In ‘The Young Pope’ Trailer
‘House Of Cards,’ meet the Vatican
HBO debuted the official trailer for its early 2017 limited series The Young Pope to fill the newly dug Westworld hole in your heart. And, by the looks of it, what Westworld was for Game of Thrones fans, The Young Pope will be to House of Cards devotees. Basically, picture Frank Underwood, a demagogue in his own right, running the Catholic church rather than America. The drama is real.
The Young Pope follows Lenny Belardo, aka Pius XIII, as the first American pope. Jude Law plays the title role with a refined sense of callousness, sinister and conniving. "My only sin," he says during confession, "is that my conscience does not accuse me of anything." What sort of violent delights will he engage in? What sort of violent ends will he meet at the conclusion of the 10-part series? With Diane Keaton playing an adversary and guide of sorts, who knows.
We'll hopefully find out when The Young Pope premieres on HBO at 9pm EST on January 15. In the meantime, watch the trailer below.
