12 Cool Things To Do When You’re Single

Love yourself

by Sydney Gore

Every year, I usually get hit with a wave of dread as Valentine's Day approaches. This year, though, I'm not entirely filled with self-loathing; I've had a change of heart now that I'm all aboard the self-love train. Rather than wallow in self-pity, I embrace what has become known as Single's Awareness Day and take the time to celebrate myself. And since I've been single for, like, ever, you could say that I'm an expert on this way of life.

As Jhené Aiko once said, "I love me enough for the both of us." I couldn't agree more. Here are 12 awesome options that you can do by yourself on February 14 that will make you want to celebrate yourself all year long—whether you're in a relationship or not.

Rub a dub dub in the tub

No company necessary—taking a bath should be done solo. If you've got the space in your tub, light a candle and pour yourself something bubbly. (Nothing says "I love myself" like Veuve Clicquot's Rosé Clicquot Message bottle.) I like to play some music as I sink deeper into the bubbles, and Syd's new album Fin will totally set the mood for your wet adventure. When you're all scrubbed out, lather yourself in some fancy oils. I recommend Balmyard Beauty's Romantic Call.

Treat yourself to a live event

In general, I find that I have the most fun when I go to events by myself. Being alone allows me to focus more on what's happening in front of me, rather than be distracted by whomever I'm with. You could try to catch a show or swing by an anti-V-Day-themed happy hour depending on your mood that evening.

Hit the mat

.... or whatever your preferred form of exercise is. Maybe try a class you've always been curious about, but never made the time for. No sweat here, except the perspiration all over your body. Investing in your health is important—don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Pole dancing, anyone? Browse some deals on Groupon.

Indulge in a sample sale

You can shop 24/7, but how often do you let yourself partake in a sample sale? Even if you're on a budget, there's no reason not to splurge when you can get a large number of discounted products. Spend your money wisely.

Do it for the culture, literally

Go to a museum or an exhibit that speaks to your soul. The best part about art is that people can appreciate it in silence. Who knows, maybe you'll meet your soul mate while quietly breathing beside the same statue. Stranger things have happened.

Get inked

Nothing says you're committed to yourself like a tattoo. Love is pain, and so is a needle as it's pressed into your flesh. Tell the haters to read it and weep.

Get a facial

You have to look at the same face every day for the rest of your life, might as well like what you see staring back at you in the mirror. You can either seek a professional or do a treatment at home. (Drunk Elephant's T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial works wonders.) Either way, your skin wins.

Check out a poetry brothel

Who wouldn't want to be completely immersed in this literary activity? It's a whole new way to experience poetry. In addition to a cabaret with a full bar, you usually have access to burlesque dancers, painters, fortune-tellers, and a jazz band. Check here for all the pretty details.

Buy a plant

Because sometimes it's not in your best interest to take on a pet. Nothing feels quite as satisfying as keeping a plant alive, whether it's a pot of cacti or a bouquet of flowers in a vase. Photosynthesis is a beautiful thing.

Get physical with a full-body massage

Remove all the tension from your hard-working body with an hour-long treatment. Massages are a great opportunity to rest your mind and meditate as well. When it's over, you'll wonder why you let yourself get so worked up about meaningless things in the first place. Groupon has your back, literally.

Restock your underwear drawer

Possessing comfortable and cute underwear is essential to adulthood. Out with the old and in with the new you. I've been eyeing the selection over at PANSY, Undone, and NU. Lingerie is for the pleasure of others, but your underwear is all for you. Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger are always there if you want to be trendy, but 100 percent organic cotton really shows that you care—about yourself.

Make a playlist of self-love anthems

Because this will come in handy at all times. You'll thank yourself later. Some great picks to start your off on your playlist-making adventure include "Oops Oh My" by Tweet, "Doomed" by Bring Me The Horizon, and "Bossy" by Kelis. Here's one from last year to use as a reference.
